Family holiday ideas
Beachcomber has a proud history of organising tailor-made holidays for all our clients especially families. Africa is a fantastic choice for those who want to twin-centre within Africa or with Mauritius, Seychelles and the Middle East. We know that each family and each child have different wish lists for their holidays so we have put together some popular itineraries to give you an idea or just a place to start.
Please remember that we can tailor make a combination of as many or as little of our destinations as you want!
South African Family Highlights
This is a fantastic itinerary for those wanting to explore everything that South Africa has to offer for city to beach and bush. We would recommend that this itinerary might be better for children over the age of 8 as there is a lot of driving involved and younger children may not get as much out of this as older children.
Day 1 – Arrive in Cape Town, collect your car and drive the Table Bay situated in the heart of the Victoria & Alfred waterfront. Spend 4 nights sampling all that Cape Town has to offer from the hustle and bustle of the Waterfront with its many shops, bars and restaurants, take the family on a cable car journey to the top of Table Mountain to see the stunning panoramic views, enjoy a morning at the aquarium or take your family out to one of the adventure parks close to Cape Town.
Day 5 – Drive to Hermanus where you will enjoy 3 nights at the Kurland Hotel located near Plettenburg Bay. There are many family friendly activities within the estate however Tsitsikamma Nature Reserve is right next door and offers equestrian activities, forest walks, beaches, water sports, and extreme activities such as bungee jumping or sky diving and all in a tranquil and safe environment.
Day 8 – Drive though some spectacular scenery in the winelands to the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve which offer two different lodges – the Garden Lodge is perfect for families with suites that can accommodate up to 2 adults and 3 children! There is so much to do – you will be spoilt for choice visit stone-age coastal caves, take a nature walk with a specialised guide, swim in the ocean, build a sandcastle or take a boat trip out to see the Cape fur seal conlony or spot a whale or shark!
Day 10 – Take the short drive back to Cape Town airport where you will connect with a flight to Johannesburg where you will take a light aircraft into the Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve for 3 nights at the world famous Savanna Private Game Reserve where you will enjoy safari at its best. What better way could there be to end your African family holiday than sampling some of the best game viewing in South Africa.
Day 13 – Take a light aircraft back to Johannesburg to connect with your flight home.
The Garden Route, City Life and a Tranquil Hideaway
Day 1 – Arrive in Johannesburg and take a connecting flight to George in the Heart of the Garden Route. Collect your car and take the short drive to Plettenburg Bay where you will spend 2 nights at The Plettenburg, a prestigious property with breathtaking views of the Ocean. For your honeymoon we would suggest upgrading to a sea view as the panoramic ocean views will be a great start to your honeymoon!
Day 3 – Take a leisurely drive to Outshoorn where you will stay at Altes Landhaus, a typical Cape Dutch style property cradled in the lush Schoemanshoek valley. This is a great base to explore the area – visit one of the many Ostrich farms and a must is the Cango Caves or just relax by the pool and take in the stunning views.
Day 5 – Drive to Swellendam for 1 night at Mardouw House. The small boutique hotel is perfect for honeymooners wanting individual service and attention.
Day 6 – Take the short drive to Cape Town and spend 2 nights at the Cape Grace, a favourites with honeymooners. Its superb waterfront location, charming interiors and informal yet attentive service ensure this is a great choice for your honeymoon. Sample some of the restaurants and bars in the V&A waterfront, take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain or take a drive through some of Cape Town’s pretty suburbs.
Day 7 – Drive to Cape Town airport, drop off your car and catch your flight to Dubai.
Day 8 - Arrive into Dubai early morning and transfer by road to Six Senses Hideaway at Zighy Bay, located in the Musandam peninsula in the Sultanate of Oman, for 6 nights. The route to Zighy Bay takes you over a spectacular mountain road before swooping down into the resort. For an added experience you could even choose to paraglide down to the resort! The all-villa accommodation allows you to literally hide away in complete seclusion, with a 24-hour personal butler and your own infinity-edged pool.
Day 14 – Return to Dubai for your flight back to the UK.
Eastern Cape Safari, Bustling Cape Town and Dubai Beach
This itinerary is for the adventurous family as there are quite a few transfers and accommodations – we would probably recommend this for families with older children so they can get the best from the stunning scenery and fantastic cuisine on offer.
Day 1 – Arrive into Johannesburg and take a connecting flight to Port Elizabeth. Pick up your car and drive out to Lalibela Game Reserve where you will spend 3 nights enjoying fantastic game viewing, stunning scenery and great service. For families we would suggest Mark’s Camp which has some fantastic two-bedroom family suites which are ideal for larger families!
Day 4 – Drive back to Port Elizabeth and fly to Cape Town where you will pick up your car and drive towards Table Mountain where you will spend 2 nights at the Cape Grace Hotel for larger families or groups they have some great two and three bedroom suites that can accommodate up to 6 people. We suggest taking your family on a cable car ride up table mountain to see the fantastic views of Cape Town and the surrounding area and maybe a trip to the aquarium located in the Victoria and Alfred waterfront followed by lunch at one of the many restaurants and cafes.
Day 6 – Wake up and spend the day at leisure sampling more of the great attractions Cape Town has to offer before returning the car at Cape Town airport and flying overnight to Dubai.
Day 7 – Arrive into Dubai airport and take your private transfer to Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort & Spa where you will spend 5 nights in the heart of the action on Jumeirah Beach. Shop in the world famous Emirates shopping mall, sample one of the many types of cuisine on offer or take a trip out to the dunes and experience a thrilling 4x4 desert safari. You could even learn to ski if you wanted……
Day 12 – Transfer back to Dubai airport for your flight home!
Cosmopolitan Cape Town and Bustling Grande Baie
Day 1 – Arrive into Cape Town and transfer to Radisson SAS Hotel Waterfront where you will spend 5 nights in one of Cape Town’s best locations, close to the popular V & A waterfront. We would recommend upgrading to a business class room where you will enjoy stunning sea-views, this is a fantastic family base for you to explore all that Cape Town and the surrounding areas have to offer. We would recommend hiring a car so your family have more flexibility and independence.
Day 8 – Transfers back to Cape Town Airport to connect with a flight over to Mauritius where you can enjoy 7 nights at the newly refurbished Le Mauricia which is located right in the heart of lively Grande Baie. The warm Mauritian hospitality mixed with a youthful and dynamic atmosphere ensure this will be a family holiday to remember. Your children can be entertained in the kid’s club or take part in one of the many activities on the beach, alternatively you could take a trip to the botanical gardens and spend some quality family time taking in some fantastic sites.
Day 15 – Transfer back to Mauritius airport for you flight home.
Family Safari, City and Beach
Day 1 – Arrive in Johannesburg and fly by light aircraft into the Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve for three nights at Savanna Private Game Reserve where safari comes first. Enjoy fantastic game viewing, including the ‘Big 5’, on exciting game drives and walks.
Day 4 – Light aircraft flight to Johannesburg for a connecting flight to Cape Town where you will spend 3 nights at the Cape Grace hotel which has a fantastic location in the heart of Cape Town’s Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Take a cable car to the top of Table Mountain and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the city or just sit back and enjoy the hustle and bustle of the fabulous waterfront in one of the many restaurants and bars.
Day 7 – Fly to Mauritius and get a short transfer to Shandrani Resort & Spa for 7 nights. Soak up the sun at the fully all inclusive 5* resort on the island where you can indulge and enjoy unrivalled Mauritian hospitality and cuisine. This is a great resort for families with children of all ages – from the great Bob Marlin mini-club to the vast selection of land and water sports on offer and a spa for you to relax – each member of the family will be spoilt for choice!
Day 14 – Private transfer back to Mauritius airport for your flight home.
