Top Family Activities in Africa
There is so much to see and do in Africa – you will be spoilt for choice. We have put together a list of all the things we love to do when travelling through Africa. Do remember that some of the best things to do are completely free – take a picnic and enjoy some of the breathtaking scenery that Africa has to offer from it's national parks to its stunning beaches.
Beachcomber's top family activities within the Eastern Cape
The Big Blue
Visit the Two Oceans Aquarium at the V&A Waterfront and see the sea life of South Africa's two oceans - the cold Atlantic and the warm Indian. A kelp forest (one of only five in the world), a two-million litre predator tank, touch pools and penguins up close are some of the attractions.
Birds of a Feather
Visit the World of Birds in Hout Bay, twenty minutes away from Cape Town's bustling centre. It's the largest bird park in Africa with walk-through aviaries, over 3500 birds, small animals and friendly monkeys.
Penguins on the Beach
On the drive towards Cape Point, stop over just beyond Simons Town to see the famous colony of African Penguins at Boulders Beach.
Old McDonald
At Imhoff's Farm (on the road to Kommetjie, 45 minutes away from Cape Town) your children can feed, touch and play with the farm animals.
Drakenstein Lion Park
Drakenstein Lion Park is situated on 7.5 hectares of ground in Paarl Valley. Stroll through the park at leisure, and view these magnificent animals as well as ostriches and farm yard animals.
Butterfly world
Situated outside Klapmuts, this is the largest free flying park for butterflies. Situated within a tropical garden, there are 11 species with approximately 60 - 70 butterflies flying around, with blue tongues, iguanas and monkeys in the background. Also offers a park where children can view spiders, snakes and scorpions, while a farmyard offers the chance to feed and interact with farm animals.
Ratanga Junction
A massive theme park just outside of Cape Town with plenty of rides will keep the entire family entertained for the whole day. This attraction is closed in winter.
Le Bonheur Crocodile Farm
Situated in outside Paarl on the R44 (Klapmuts). The farm offers an insightful glimpse into these pre-historic reptiles.
Monkeytown
Monkeytown is a sanctuary for 25 exotic monkey species just outside of Somerset-West. The sanctuary offers guided tours, feeding time talks, touch farm yard, play park and restaurant. There is also interaction with tame monkeys under guided supervision.
World's Highest Bungy Jump – 216m
Renowned as the "Rolls Royce" of Bungy Jumps, Bloukrans offers the world’s highest Bungy Jump, off the highest bridge in Africa – 216m.
As well as all of the above – why not try something new for the first time. Try kayaking, abseiling, surfing, sailing, mountain biking or just relax on the beach – in Africa you can do almost anything you want.
