Kids Safari Clubs
African accommodations do not really offer the standard ‘kid’s clubs’. Many of them offer fantastic children’s facilities alongside some great children’s programmes. To give you an example of this we have chosen two of our most popular accommodations for families.
South Africa
They have devised a children's programme which we feel optimises the safari experience with quality family time.
Each family is different and children require varying degrees of attention, which is why the emphasis at Lalibela is to be as flexible as possible to ensure memorable family holidays. An overview of the children's programme is as follows:
- In the early morning Lalibela's child minders come on duty so that parents can leave for their morning game drive. The children are given a chance to wake up, get dressed and be ready for the day.
- Breakfast is served and then it is time for the activities of the morning, starting with a short game drive with their own game ranger and in their own special game viewing vehicle, taking care to avoid any close encounters with dangerous game. Parents are welcome to stay behind and accompany their children on the kiddies' game drive.
- The middle of the day is time for the family to spend together. Before the adults go out on their afternoon game drive, high tea is served for both adults and children. The children then head out on their own afternoon game drive and return to the lodge for an early dinner before getting creative with some arts and crafts activities. Young children are looked after by child minders during the adults' dinner sitting.
Ulusaba
At Ulusaba your children will be known as Cubs for the duration of their stay. We would recommend Rock Lodge for a family stay at Ulusaba because it is small and intimate. They do not operate a set programme, they have a set welcome pack but all activities are tailored to meet the requirements of your child.
Your 'Cub' will receive a Cub's Club Backpack which contains lots of little goodies to help keep them entertained and to help to educate them about the African Bush on arrival at Ulusaba. They will find in their rooms a special welcome letter and a list of phone numbers they can dial from their room so it is easy for them to get hold of other members of their family, along with Ulusaba staff.
Ulusaba do not allow children under the age of six on game drives for their own safety. Cubs are also unable to participate in Safari Walks, but the rangers can arrange short excursions around Rock Lodge to spot birds, insects, lizards and so on.
Your cubs will be treated to their own choice of food – they can eat the traditional safari style game dinner or they can choose between to eat pizza, toasties, pasta etc.
During the evening you can take advantage of the free babysitting on offer so you can enjoy your meal and relax after a good day of game viewing (please be aware that off-duty staff who have experience with children are used for this, due to the location they do not have professional child carers available, but with advance notice this could be arranged at an extra cost).
Jaci’s Safari
Children of all ages are very welcome at Jaci's. But they will be split into age groups to ensure each child gets the most from their safari experience.
- Children aged 8 and older are allowed on the adults drive and will be given dinner in the dining room on their return from the evening drive.
- The little ones aged 1 - 7 are taken on a separate "jungle drive" during the day - this is anything from 1/2 an hour to an hour and a half depending on the interest levels of the children on the drive.
- Child minders look after them whilst you are on drive and dinner is served @ 18.00 in the dining room.
Specialised Children’s Safari at Jaci's
Jaci's Lodges are offers a specialized safari programme for children. Please note that this is an optional extra. You will find that it is more detailed and offers a wider bush experience. There will be an additional charge per child per half day for this – it must be booked in advance and is an optional extra.
This programme will be available to children aged 3 – 10 yr and will be facilitated by a professional guide. Activities will include bush craft, inspector and detective trails, animal tracking, birds of a feather, touch tables, river safaris, game drives and walks.
We recommend their first day of the programme to start the morning of their 2nd day at the Lodge. i.e. a 3 night stay at Jaci's will give the opportunity for the children to be booked for 2 full days of Specialized Children's Safaris.
